We just barely got home tonight and I'm happy to report that everything went great! Katy's surgery went exactly as her doctor wanted. They removed her lens from her eye (including the cataract) and replaced it with a synthetic lens. They gassed her before they put the IV in, and they gave her some "happy meds" before they took her back for surgery. So basically she doesn't even know she had surgery! We stayed overnight in a hotel and then brought her back for a check-up today. They said it all looks good. She has to wear a metal cover over her eye for one week. Then they're going to remove that and get her fitted for some glasses. I know she'll be adorable, but I hope she doesn't hate them.

We capped off the day with a trip to the Houston zoo and she just loved it! Katy's favorite animals there were the new baby elephant and giraffe, and the jaguar...probably because Go Diego Go has a pet jaguar. My Dad met us at the zoo and we had such a great time. You would never guess Katy just had surgery. Allen was just grinning the entire time. He was so good for the entire trip, even though he's getting some more teeth up top.

The best part about everything was that Katy's anesthesiologist looked a lot like Marie. We told the doc that and she was so excited! I didn't point it out to Katy b/c I didn't want her to associate Marie with the surgery in case it hurt her. But I felt so comforted from it...like Marie was there with her while I couldn't be. Peter agreed with me.

Right now the only bad part is eye drops every two hours. But considering how bad it could have been, I guess we're getting off really easy. Pretty much everyone else there waiting for surgery was in much worse shape than Katy...really disfigured or burned or deformed. We really were counting our blessings.

Meg,
I'm glad to hear everything went wonderful Katy was definitely in my prayers about the surgery from the time you told me about it a few months ago. What a lucky girl to have gone to the zoo so soon after! I bet she loved it. My favorite animal in the whole wide world is the Elephant! I just hate to see them at the zoo in such tight corders swaying back and forth with nothing to do but to intertain people walking by. So sad.
Thank you for the comment you made in your email! that was super sweet. I loved it!! Katy is so lucky to have parents like you!

Metal patch? man, that sucks. How are you ever going to make her keep that on?
I bet she will look so cute in glasses!
If Miles ever had to wear glasses, he would hate them and hate me for making him wear them. He doesn't like thangs on his face at all.

I had one of those suckers when we last went to Disney and they ARE HUGE!! :o) And the elephants were Katy's favorite part of the zoo! They actually had a lot of room because their part had just been redesigned and expanded for the new baby elephant born just before Christmas. Katy thought all the animals should have babies after she saw how cute the elephant and giraffe babies were! As for the patch, I've just been giving Katy a break from it this morning and watching her closely so she doesn't scratch or rub her eye. That's what this patch is for - to protect it. She's loving the time off from it, too!

Hi Meg! I'm so glad to hear that Katy is well and the sugery went good. When ever we have to take Zach to the hospital (there's been multiple times - multiple surgies)
anyway - my point is it doesn't matter how big or small the surgery is - your percious baby's life flashes right before your eyes as they're rolling your child off with out you. I hate it - every time. And then afterwards - you're just so grateful to have your baby back in your arms to love and hold.
And there is always that child you see there that is so much worse than yours. Every single time - it's a great reminder that is could be worse and we are so blessed to have what we have.

Anyway, glad to hear all went well. And we love you!

Hey Meg, Nancy pointed out to me that we have the same blog outline. So funny! I didn't even notice. I will change it.
